this week, leeds 15.06.
a brief one, this week. doesn’t seem to be as much on as usual. it’s probably because glastonbury’s round the corner..
either way, i wouldn’t miss the thermals at the brudenell on monday 15th for anything in the worlddd.

forming in portland in summer ‘02, the post-pop-punk trio have just released their fourth (”and possibly best”) album to date, now we can see.

and what a record it is. the band’s currently on a uk tour that kicked off in bristol last night and makes its second stop in leeds tonight.
the new album is immense. obvious anthems like the title track, with its opening “oh eh oh a woah” chant (yes, it sounds as cool as it looks), to ‘i hold the sound’ and ‘we were sick’. every track’s a gem, all eleven. the brude will be singing along tonight, even if it’s just me up front!
without a doubt my favourite band at the moment, i’ve been playing all four albums non-stop. third album, the body, the blood, the machine, has seen some serious play. i’m talking three times a day, at least. i’m sooo looking forward to this gig. oh boy. :)
supporting the coolest trio in town are local boys sketches. on the whole tour, i might add.

it’s been a busy past couple months for the lads. when not messing around with giant tennis balls, they’re gigging. and when they’re not doing that, they’re only putting out new singles.
they launched they’re latest single, ’slow start’, at the brudenell just over a fortnight ago. it’s a lovely little song i can’t stop playing, and one you should have. get it here. and keep your eyes peeled for another new song the boys recorded for the golden owl that i’ll be putting up soon. it’s a good’n.
tickets are £8 from seetickets.com. doors 7.30pm.
onto friday 19th and jack peñate at the cockpit.

i like jack peñate. problem? ‘07’s matinee was a nice bit of indie-pop.
jack went from the acoustic bar and club scene to being snapped up by xl and releases his second album, everything is new, on monday 22nd, preceeded by the new single ‘be the one’ a week earlier.
i’ve not listened to the new record much, yet, but everything i’ve read about everything is new has been positive.
tickets sold out.
leeds’s grunge revival* comes to wakefield on saturday 20th, with dinosaur pile-up at escobar. (*which pillock’s to blame for this? go on, fess up. “grunge revival”..?! have a larrrf.)

the leeds 3-piece are on their last little tour before a summer of festivals, including t in the park, boardmasters and bestival. big foo fighters fans, matt (23, guitar, microphone, shoe size 12 or 13 depending on the shoe) remembers seeing dave grohl and co at the scottish festival as a teenager and having his mind blown “wide open”. it can’t be too bad being asked to return to play, eh.
the boys also feature at reading and leeds and play on the nme/radio one stage alongside bands like the maccabees and glasvegas. after a busy ‘08, supporting the likes of the automatic and the kills, with headline shows in london (club nme at koko in camden) too, ‘09 has so far seen the band go from strength to strentgh. but they’re not letting the success go to their head just yet. not until david letterman is throwing his pants off yelling “DINOSAUR FUCKING PILE-UP KIDS!!”, anyway.
support comes from japanese voyeurs and lapels.
tickets £6 from ticketweb.co.uk. doors 8pm. 16+.
and, if you fancy staying in leeds, the angel’s share hosts dead young records for a midsummer night’s dream.

amongst the artists on the day is leeds leg-end micky p kerr. and he’s got a new band, don’t you know. ‘gays’, or something like that. i’m meeting up with the men later on this week for a little spot of chalk and blackboard fun. i’m expecting a bit of a masterpiece.
another band playing is killing fields of ontario. i like this band a lot, you might have picked up on that over the months. they supported broken records at the cockpit a little over a week ago and have got through to the heats of the futuresound competition starting next week. not doing too bad, are they. fully deserved, i say.
more details coming soon, including stage times. tom brookes has had to cancel, unfortunately, and you’ll know his replacement when i do.
the fun starts at 4pm and it’s free. here’s to good weather..
don’t forget to check out miles benjamin anthony robinson in session if you’ve not already, and have a look at some lovely photographs of leeds in the first part of the polaroid project.
have fun.. x
