this week, leeds 08.03.
hello. it’s been a while. life, and that. it’s funny, as i type this it’s just occurred to me it was exactly a year ago yesterday that i started this blog. happy birthday me. i guess i’ll drink to that at the well, tonight..

it’s been a good past twelve months for leeds 4-piece grammatics, whose self-titled debut album came out a year ago this month. a tour with bloc party followed and the band head off to austin next week to play a confirmed three shows at this year’s SXSW.

i’ve yet to see them live with their current line-up, since cellist emilia ergin left last november to be replaced by lindsay wilson. should be fun.
funner still with a bit of blue roses, with shipley’s princess laura groves stepping in to replace lone wolf who wern’t able to make the show after all.

again, another yorkshire artist for who the past year has been pretty good. to be fair, that’s probably an understatement.
constantly touring, the last year has seen blue roses release a self-titled debut to critical acclaim, whilst playing a whole host of festivals as well as several european dates and, recently, a tour of the states. laura plays solo tonight, something you mightn’t haven’t seen much of of late. a treat, indeed.
and, as if the line-up wasn’t already good enough, friends and firm favourites of the golden owl sketches play their first leeds show since november.

the band, whose latest single ‘bleed victoria’ still makes regular appearances on my jukebox, have been a bit quiet of late whilst they record new material. and, having recently signed up with major booking agency itb, things are looking good for the band.
and, if you wondered, matt’s (guitar, vocals) hand is a lot better. that’ll teach him.. drunken tomfoolery isn’t cool.
last, but by no means least, are downdime. fronted by ged mcgurn (drums, wonderswan), they’re a wonderful indie-pop 4-piece whose music is fun, fun, fun. i love ‘em. i saw them support jeffrey lewis last year and they’ve had a fan in me ever since.
7.45-8.15 downdime
8.30-9.00 sketches
9.15-9.45 blue roses
10-11 grammatics
tickets £5 from crash and jumbo. £6 on the door. doors 7pm.
friday 12th sees four tet play tj’s woodhouse club, a show that’s been sold out for the past couple months..

four tet, the solo-project of london boy kieran hebden, released his new album there is love in you on domino records in january. his fifth album, recent work has seen him team up with jazz drummer steve reid, as well as a split ep with once mysterious dubstep producer burial.
i hear he’ll be playing within a wall of pa stacks, each one facing the other, for a true, full surround sound experience. sounds likes fun.
the new ‘love cry’ is available now on 12″ and includes remixes by joy orbison and roska. support comes from hotly-tipped pantha du prince.
tickets sold out. doors 8pm. check out theironwagon.co.uk, a fun read..
if you’re not lucky enough to have a ticket for four tet, the brudenell social club is your saviour..

honour before glory, the new solo-project of leeds’ favourite ginge whiskas (forward russia, dance to the radio, mi mye, more..), plays his first gig with his new band at the brudenell this friday. describing the music, steve lamacq said it was “great, naturally tentative and atmospheric”. that’s not far off. and, with a gang of friend on board to help (simon and dave from i like trains, fran rodgers and more) you wouldn’t expect any less really.
and, speak of the devil, the lovely fran rodgers herself will be playing too. i’ve not seen fran live for a while so i’m extra excited about this. yanni montoya (featuring katie of forward russia fame, too) play their first leeds show too.
this’ll be fun. did i mention it was FREE..!?
doors 7.30pm. entry is freefreefree!
